More Acres Required for Organic Production

December 15, 2015

I have no problem with people choosing organic foods, but before we start assigning labels like “sustainable” to one production method over another, let’s be clear that there are definitely downsides to organic production. For one thing, the yields are so much lower than conventional crops that it would require a significant expansion of farmed acres to meet current production rates. Buying conventional produce doesn’t mean your aren’t promoting environmentally-friendly farming methods, or vice versa!

For more on the organic yield gap, as compared to conventional production, check out Steve Savage’s analysis here.
